Gallery Sketchers – February 2021
Where the Incinerator Gallery comes to you
Our artist educator Carly Richardson invites you to join along with these creative activities from the comfort of your own home. Please take a photo of your drawings and share them on Instagram, Facebook, or our Facebook Group Incinerator Gallery Sketchers.

Getting back into drawing and mark making
Subject: Still life objects – objects from your kitchen and garden
Our February Gallery Sketchers allows participants to embrace their homes and consider the creative opportunities within their own environments. Exploring mark making, both returnees and first timer Gallery Sketchers will find this an opportunity to cement and extend their drawing practices. This introductory session will revisit the array of material and technical approaches to drawing that aim to challenge our preconceptions around drawing. This is an opportunity to relax and meditate on the benefits of drawing for all ranges of ability.
Media and materials: pencils (2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 6B), pens (biro, ink), watercolour, water soluble pastel, chalk. Eraser, sharpener, paper (cartridge (180 gsm), printer paper (80 gsm), mixed media paper (240 gsm))
Focus: applying marks to the page: scratches, lines, dots, points, organic and geometric lines, continuous and short lines, tone, shadow, hatching and cross hatching.
Still life object 1: Garlic example
2 to 3 short warm up drawings focused on line (2-5 mins each)
1 extended drawing – focused on line, but expanded to also explore tone, texture, colour and/or shadow (10-15 mins).
Still life object 2: Rose example
1 to 2 drawings focused on line (2-5 mins each)
1 extended drawing – focused on line, but expanded to also explore tone, texture, colour and/or shadow (15-20 mins).
