This month our Barking Spider Visual Theatre artist Laura invites you to join in this creative activity from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Colour, shape and movement

You will need a glass bottle (or tupperware container, glass jar or plastic water bottle), something that holds water and can be seen through by you and your baby.

The materials and objects used in the video are examples of what you could use to explore this theme. As always, Laura encourages you to be creative and playful when finding your own visual stimulus to explore.

Materials used:

• food colouring
• colourful glitter
• sparkly streamers sticky-taped to a chopstick
• a ribbon sticky-taped to a chopstick
• a straw

Help guide your baby play or toddler through the activity by asking questions and exploring what you notice. Laura suggests you consider contrast or difference and let the questions below guide your conversation:

• what is it like to use lots of food dye, or only a little?
• what does it look like when we move fast or slow?
• can we move our puppets up and down?
• can we blow bubbles slowly and then quickly?
• what colours do you see?
• do the shapes remind you of other things or memories?
• as the colours float and move do they remind you of something else?

Help to guide your baby or toddler through the exercise by asking them to notice what colours can they see? What do the shapes/ movements in the water remind them of?

If you would like to extend your play Laura recommends listening to different music (classical and instrumental music works well). Respond and react with movements and facial expressions to what you and your baby hear and can make visual through movement and colour.
