Exploring texture: Make a sensory mobile

The theme of this month’s play is a tactile experience thinking about how things feel or texture. Look around your home for objects that have interesting and different textures to make your mobile more interesting. As always, Laura encourages you to be creative and playful when selecting items for your own mobile.

To create your homemade sensory mobile firstly you need a frame. In this video Laura has used a hoola hoop. You could use wooden spoons in a cross shape or a coat hanger. You will also need some twine or string to attach your materials and objects on the frame.

These are the materials Laura used:

  • a pinecone
  • feathers
  • baking paper
  • tissue paper
  • bubble wrap
  • an unused kitchen scourer
  • clean woollen sock
  • piece of felt fabric
  • hair scrunchie
  • a real flower (ensure the plant is non-toxic)

Using your sensory mobile during tummy time or whilst your baby is on their back can be a great way to keep them captivated and exploring their senses. Also, be sure to supervise your baby’s play.

As always, there are no right and wrong ways to explore, so have fun and enjoy this tactile exploration of texture!
