Sensory play

Finding sound in the visual and the visual in sound.

The materials and objects used in this video are used as examples because they are what Laura had on hand at home. Look around your own home for objects and things that make different sounds, shapes, textures, patterns and visual stimulus.

As always, Laura encourages you to be creative and playful with your baby or toddler.

Here are some examples of sounds you could explore:

• cardboard to wobble
• paper to scrunch
• homemade rice and lentil shakers
• your own voice

To express these objects visually you could use:

• finger paint on cardboard
• crayons or markers on paper
• drawing with sticks
• finger marks in the dirt or sand

If you would like to extend on these activities, Laura suggests listening to different styles of music as you and your baby or toddler respond visually by drawing or sculpting together.

With all these activities, remember there are no rights or wrongs. This is experimentation and play filled with sensory fun. Enjoy!
