A warm Happy New Year from all of us at Incinerator Gallery! We have now reopened and encourage you to visit our incredible summer exhibitions, showing until Saturday, 17 January.

In our Main Gallery space, ‘Ako ay may kaibigan, kasama ko kahit saan (I have a friend; where I go, they go)’ explores the concept of the shadow symbolising the lingering spectres of colonial history that follow the Filipino diaspora.

In our Atrium space, ‘…and there's no one around to hear it’ is an exhibition by dylan marelić that explores power structures and ways nature is shaped through human systems.

In Boadle Hall, ‘Brown Pillars II’ is an ongoing body of work by artist Aida Azin that interrogates colonial hierarchies within the arts.

Next Thursday, 15 January, we're hosting a summer school holiday workshop for children aged 6–12 years old. Explore three unique playable sculptures on display outside the gallery, then bring your own playground design ideas to life, using mixed media to construct an amazing 3D mini playable sculpture or playground of your very own!

Marvel at the metal armatures in artist dylan marelic’s latest exhibition ‘…and there’s no one around to hear it’, in our Atrium space.

Reflective of the natural curve of fallen tree branches, these structures are presented with recordings of creaking wood – field recordings made with contact microphones– offer the audience a sensory experience of the tree’s continuing negotiation with its environment.

Through this interplay, the work becomes a call and response between nature and human intervention, foregrounding the ongoing conversation between built systems and the more-than-human world.

The concept of the shadow is an important symbol in the exhibition 'Ako ay may kaibigan, kasama ko kahit saan (I have a friend; where I go, they go)', currently showing in our Main Gallery space.

The exhibiting artists Celline Mercado, Jermaine Ibarra, and Justyne Allen use shadow to symbolise the lingering spectres of colonial history that follow the Filipino diaspora. These shadows of colonial history and injustice linger across time and place, ghost-like. But to hold the hand of your ghost is to face it, befriend it, play with it.

Jermaine Ibarra is an inter-disciplinary artist based in Naarm whose canvas works feature in our group exhibition 'Ako ay may kaibigan, kasama ko kahit saan (I have a friend; where I go, they go)' that explores the lingering spectres of colonial history that follow the Filipino diaspora . Having spent his formative years between Manila and ‘Australia’, this hybridity informs his practice.

Fragments recur throughout the series: a man and his dog, a hotel room, a battleground. Using impasto techniques, layers are scraped back, overwritten and submerged, creating a painterly rhythm of revealing and concealing.

Jermaine frames opacity at the centre of these abstractions, which operate as a form of defence against external colonial gaze and the painterly traditions of visual legibility.

For our exhibiting artist Celline Mercado, the trajectory of the Filipino diaspora remains unpredictable and precarious, and these uncertainties continue to shape how Celline understands her own movement through the world.

They hold the weight of her longing for steadiness, even as she recognises that such security has rarely been afforded to Filipinos. In keeping the works afloat, she gestures to her lived experience: that belonging is not a fixed destination, but an ongoing negotiation with the conditions she has inherited.

Artist Justyne Allen’s installation engages with the Filipino concept of the agimat as an active inheritance; a conduit through which cultural memory, protection, and identity persist despite dislocation.

Born to a Filipino mother and an English-Australian father, Justyne positions this work as a site to interrogate the vantage point of the diasporic subject encountering ‘Filipino-ness’ not as a static category but as an ongoing negotiation between distance and belonging.

As an artist, dylan marelić thinks through systems, drawing on found materials, waste and incidental media to create poetic reflections on over-looked human made and natural phenomena.

Their exhibition …and there's no one around to hear it, combines sculpture in the form of metal armatures to represent fallen tree branches, and sound in the form of slowed recordings of creaking wood, amplifying the imperceptible shifts that occur as branches respond to environmental changes.

Through this interplay, the work becomes a call and response between nature and human intervention, foregrounding the ongoing conversation between built systems and the more-than-human world.

In our current exhibition, ‘Ako ay may kaibigan, kasama ko kahit saan (I have a friend; where I go, they go)’, our exhibiting artists engage with familiar symbols of domesticity and architecture—the bed, the window, the TV—to explore Filipino identity, cultural visibility, and ancestral legacy.

Explored through the concept of the shadow, the works blend Indigenous Filipino, Western, and hybrid iconographies, reflecting on a complex past, reclaiming these shadows as part of an evolving decolonial consciousness.

Artist Jermaine Ibarra’s practice weaves between painting, sculpture, installation and music. Having spent his formative years between his native Manila and so-called Australia, this hybridity shapes his perspective and permeates his work.

Developed between Naarm and Manila, Jermaine’s series of abstract paintings navigate the friction between his internal world and the physical landscapes he moves through, tracing the impossibility of being caught between the two. “The work takes on what I can’t carry,” he explains, “and turns it into something I can face.”

Artist Aida Azin's ongoing body of work 'Brown Pillars' interrogates colonial hierarchies within the arts. Her practice develops through studio painting, journal writing, and community conversations.

In 2025, Aida has reworked Brown Pillars to examine the overlooked and appropriated cultural production and labour relations shaped by the Global South and exploited by the British Empire.

She draws on her experiences as a ‘third culture kid’ of Filipino-Iranian heritage on Aboriginal lands in her exhibition 'Brown Pillars II', now showing in our Atrium space.

Her work reflects on the fragmented, non-linear nature of diasporic experience, shaped by the ongoing processes of learning, unlearning, and reconnecting.

Congratulations to our 2025 Fireworks People’s Choice Award winner, Eli Khamly for 'Us'.

On this artwork, Eli states "the concepts of identity and privilege are explored through 27 portraits of friends and family as babies. Influenced by my father's life journey as an asylum seeker, each portrait reflects on a different life story, the privilege each individual is born with, and the impact each child carries."

Thanks to everyone who came along to see this year’s exhibition and voting in the awards.
