Drawn from the permanent collection of Moonee Valley City Council (MVCC), Views and Vistas of the Valley presents a compelling visual dialogue between place, history, community and perceptions.
This collection exhibition explores how a public collection reflects the narrative of the area’s development. It examines this evolution through the lenses of architecture, landscape, people and still life, alongside some of Moonee Valley’s iconic public art installations.
The merging of City of Essendon and parts of City of Keilor formed the Moonee Valley City Council in 1994. The art collection was shaped by inheriting the local heritage of the former Councils, and further acquisitions thereafter – enriched by donations from community mainstays like the RSL and Rotary Club, whose contributions preserved vital pieces of the local memory and grassroots culture. The MVCC is housed and cared for at the Incinerator Gallery in Aberfeldie.
Audiences are invited to consider the ways art can amplify place-its histories, transformations and everyday resonance- and recognize the many ways in which a community can be seen-and can see itself-through art.
This exhibition reflects how the community continues to shape Moonee Valley and document the evolution of the city’s character.
