This exhibition features geometric faces in a variety of shapes and vibrant colours. While these embroidered features—eyes, nose, and mouth—bear anthropomorphic traits, they do not adhere to any specific or recognisable identity. Instead, the artwork encourages viewers to contemplate a world beyond categorisation and identity.
Within this body of work, Christina prompts viewers to question how we interpret the visual sensory information we encounter. Crafted using traditional tapestry techniques and composed of cotton and wool yarns, this work pays homage to the historical significance of embroidery as a medium for women's creative expression and reflects the meditative process integral to its creation.
Christina Darras is an interdisciplinary artist and a jewellery designer of Athenian Greek origin, she moved to Melbourne a few years ago. She has studied drawing and painting at Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France and printmaking at Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London, UK.
