Through Her Eyes: Leah Mariani

Through Her Eyes is a series of prints by artist Leah Mariani that examines the gender values that are imparted onto children through popular nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Feminist ideas are laid atop old-fashioned rhymes, using both text and imagery to highlight the often complex and contradictory lessons we teach our children. Each print is hand-made and consists of pink text and a screen-printed image over the top. The seemingly unrelated image gives new meaning to the underlying text. These old-style nursery rhymes are re-examined through a contemporary feminist lens.

Leah Mariani is a Melbourne based artist whose figurate work examines traditional and historic story-telling genres and the continued impact of traditional female roles on our contemporary culture.
