Through drawing, the artist Amy Cornall attempts to reconcile the familiar with the unfamiliar. The works contain elements of botanical drawing and abstraction, whilst featuring the white ground of the paper as a tangible metaphor for absence.

‘Space to Consider Absence’ began when the artist’s older sibling moved to Darwin.  After visiting her sister in Darwin, the artist began making work that combined these two very different landscapes; her own suburban Melbourne garden with tropical Darwin and surrounds. In the title artwork, broad-leafed, ubiquitous garden plant Fatsia Japonica contrasts with strappy Pandanus growing wild along the riverbanks.

Plants and landscapes are a primary source of inspiration for the artist, with other influences including textile art, etchings and an interest in natural history illustration.

She worked professionally as an Artist Weaver at the Australian Tapestry Workshop.
