…and there’s no one around to hear it
29 November 2025 - 18 January 2026

Artist(s): dylan marelić
Location: The Atrium
This exhibition explores the complex life histories held within tree branches and traces their silent yet profound responses to the Anthropocene—a period of time during which human activities have impacted the environment through distinct geological change. Artist dylan marelić sees branches as records, embodying the environmental pressures and disruptions of their surroundings. Each twist or kink in a branch reveals its resilience, adapting to human interventions like nearby construction projects, as the limb strives to find sunlight.
The exhibition combines sculpture and sound to illustrate these arboreal stories. Metal armatures are bent to follow the natural curve of fallen branches, preserving their form as a lasting record. Speakers embedded at the junctions emit slowed-down sounds of creaking, capturing the movement of the tree in response to subtle environmental changes. Contact microphones amplify each creak and crack, allowing audiences to feel the micro-movements within the branch, as if witnessing its life in real-time. Through these elements, the artist creates a call and response between the branches and their environment, drawing attention to nature’s persistent dialogue with human impact.
dylan marelić is a Naarm-based artist whose practice centers on environmental storytelling through sculpture, 3D animation, sound, and immersive installations. dylan holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from RMIT University, where they received the prestigious Lowenstein Graduate Award. Their work draws on found materials, waste, and incidental media to create poetic reflections on often-overlooked natural phenomena and human impact on the environment.
In addition to their solo practice, dylan collaborates with public artists, including Alexander Knox, Eliza Hutchison, and Lisa Waup, contributing skills in 3D modeling, fabrication, and computer-aided design for large-scale public art projects. With a background in architectural design, dylan brings technical precision to projects while infusing them with a contemplative exploration of environmental and anthropogenic themes.
