Incinerator Gallery is a community gallery located by the scenic Maribyrnong River. We offer an annual calendar of engaging programs and exhibitions that seek to inspire, challenge and educate locals and visitors to Moonee Ponds. With a curatorial focus on art for social change, we seek to present a range of solo and group exhibitions by local and national contemporary Australian artists which we supplement with strong education programs and arts participation programs.

Incinerator Gallery attracts a strong following from local audiences, as well as metropolitan Melbourne, who come to see artists of national significance exhibit along-side local artists and engage with local sites and attractions of the area.

Entry to Incinerator Gallery exhibitions is free.

You can find more information about the Incinerator Gallery including programs and the building’s history at incineratorgallery.com.au

The Incinerator Art Award is our annual art award and exhibition.

Established in 2015, the award celebrates dynamic contemporary arts practices that are socially engaged, environmentally aware and community focussed.

It is an inclusive and diverse award that celebrates the vibrancy of community within and beyond Moonee Valley. It presents critical, ambitious and experimental practices, encompassing visual art, film, performance, writing, architecture and design.

The award pays homage to Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony—the progressive architects who collaboratively designed the Essendon Incinerator in 1929-30. They believed that art and architecture are ethical enterprises that should aim to bring about positive social change. Hence the award’s theme, ‘Art for Social Change’.

This nationally recognised award demonstrates the crucial role art plays for contemporary Australian audiences, underpinning Incinerator Gallery as a vital space for engaged conversations through visual art and creative practice.

In 2021 we have had over 200 entries from every state and territory in Australia. The selection committee will be selecting approximately 20 works for the exhibition of the shortlisted artists. The exhibition runs for 11 weeks from 13 August to 31 October.

On the 13 August, the opening night of the exhibition, there is a celebratory announcement of the prize winners, with speeches and formalities.  There is professional photography documenting the occasion and a community-wide, open invitation to this event stating that ‘everybody is welcome’.

Over the 11 weeks of the exhibition there will be a number of widely promoted talks and public programs at the gallery that bring people to the space to engage with art and ideas.
