This exhibition offers fresh perspectives on photography from contemporary practices. Encompassing still and moving image, installation and sculpture, photography is presented beyond its formal traditions as concealed images purposefully eluding easy categorisation. The artworks in this exhibition cross genres, resisting a narrow view of how the photograph is usually perceived.

We're thrilled to announce our esteemed panel of judges for the Incinerator Art Award 2024.

Joining us this year are Bec Cole, Nikki Lam and Sebastian Henry-Jones, who will select the winning artworks that best demonstrate Art for Social Change.

Bec Cole @msbec

Bec is a champion of creating access to contemporary art and performance for everyone. She is the Executive Director & Co-CEO of Footscray Community Arts @footscrayarts, a place dedicated to the elevation of community engaged contemporary art practice in Melbourne’s West.

Nikki Lam @curiousother

Currently co-director of Hyphenated Projects @hyphenated_projects and Biennial, Nikki Lam is an artist-curator and filmmaker based in Narrm/Melbourne. Working primarily with moving images and text, her work explores memory through contemplation on time, space and impermanence.

Sebastian Henry-Jones @turbochargedseb

Seb is the Curator at West Space @westspace, Melbourne, and was previously Curatorial Assistant for the 22nd and 23rd editions of the Biennale of Sydney, NIRIN and Rivus. Seb’s curatorial approach is led by an interest in DIY thinking, and situated in the context provided by the gentrification of Sydney and Melbourne’s cultural landscapes.

Upcoming exhibition: ‘All these eyes were mine’ by Anatol Pitt @anatolp

This exhibition takes inspiration from Italo Calvino's short story ‘The Spiral’, which humorously explores the evolutionary journey of eyes from the perspective of a mollusc. In this story, an exchange of gazes unfolds between animals and humans, culminating in the mollusc returning the human gaze from beneath the water's surface. The exhibition explores surfaces as paradoxical entities, serving as barriers and bridges between realms.

Upcoming Exhibition: ‘fruits, flowers and a psychoscape’ by Jeremy Eaton (@jeremy.w.eaton) & Nicholas Smith (@nit_schmidt)
This collaborative exhibition is the second iteration of the artists’ joint exploration of historically codified queer sensibilities that pervade Australian modernism.

For the exhibition, the artists have created a spatial setting comprising painting, sculptures, and a text work, which responds to the surrealist painting practices of Adrian Feint and James Gleeson.

Whether you’re starting a new artwork or refining an ongoing watercolour project, join artist and arts therapist Xiang Li for a watercolour studio workshop to recieve tailored advice.

Led by artist Sachiko Mardon, this six-week evening course for adults focuses on clay hand-building techniques as a foundation for making small useful objects.

In a small group setting, students will learn about clay types and applications, methods of forming including pinching, coiling and slab-building to create a series of objects that are fired, glazed and functional. All materials provided. Suitable for all skill levels.
